Digital Magazines

So, I subscribed to a free three issue trial of Nylon magazine. Once my trial was up, I had the opportunity to subscribe to a year of digital Nylon for one year for only $1.99 US. I thought this was super cool, as I love the magazine and am all about saving trees and energy and money. Also, I live on the computer and haven't actually picked up a real paper magazine for eons.

This whole experience with the digital edition of Nylon kinda got me interested in seeing which other magazines are available in digital format. I also thought that digital editions must be substantially cheaper because the publisher does not have to pay for printing and shipping.

Make

Make magazine is available in digital format. However, you only get a paltry $8 off by subscribing to digital only. Kinda lame and not much incentive to subscribe to the digital edition considering you get the digital edition free if you subscribe to the print format of Make.

Zinio
www.zinio.com
has a number of magazines available electronically, including Penthouse and Playboy. (Digital subscriptions to these mags might be cool for the guy whose wife/girlfriend might not be so happy with him receiving print versions in the mail.)

Texterity

Newsstand

Qmags
www.qmags.com
These editions are available in PDF. Not much selection though unless you are interested in trade magazines such as Cabling Installation and Maintenance.

Scientific American
www.sciamdigital.com
This digital edition is $39.95 US a year, which kinda sucks because its only $49.99 CAN for a one year print subscription. Although, you do get access to the digital archives with your one year digital subscription.

PDF-Mags.com
www.pdf-mags.com
This site is super cool! Free PDF mags, some very well-designed. Great for inspiration.

Before and After Magazine
www.bamagazine.com
Forgot about this one, but I do have a bunch of their back issues on my compu and half-price for digital editions seems reasonable.

Thanks for the post on digital magazines! I work for NXTbook Media - we're the ones who make NYLON's mag, as well as many others. That being said, most of our clients do fall in the B-to-B category, similar to Qmags.

Hope you're enjoying NYLON!

We have recently decided to go with Qmags after an exhaustive search. There are a lot of so called companies providing so called Digital Editions out there but after much research and conversations we have found that Qmag /Qiosk provides a "serious" and credible solution for our Digital Initiative. We looked beyond the hype and found that Qmags was the best provider and the best value in a recently crowded field that they were an early leader in.

We are saving money, making money by expanding our rate base at a fraction of the cost of print and Qmags' circulation experts are helping us navigate these uncharted waters. It's a win-win.
